Detroit used a draft pick on Washington, stashed him for a year, let him develop, then gave him some guaranteed money, yet now they've cut him before they see a single minute's return on that. They've not cut him for a salary saving, and they've not even cut him for Chucky Atkins; they've cut him for a roster spot that they don't need yet, and may never need.

Invest in something, realize after some assessment that their is a great chance your investment is not going to pay off, cut the investment loose so that you may focus on another investment that has a greater chance of paying off. Money lost, sure, but better than hanging onto an investment that you are pretty positive will never pay off.

I'm sure the thinking is that whoever that future roster filler may be, whether he's from the NBDL, Europe, or some guy that cleared waivers, he's going to have a better shot of panning out than Deron Washington would have. If Deron Washington turns out awesome, than that would be a good "Fire Joe" reason, but as of now, it's as insignificant as any wasted 2nd round draft pick.

I'm not sure. They're quite positive at this point he's worthless? He's a team distraction, constantly doing E at the club with the other young guys? I guess you're right, it is pretty non-sensical given the information presented to us.

It could be anything we don't know about. But the point is that just a few months ago he was handed a guaranteed contract...so not just like any wasted 2nd round pick. One that was seconded and committed too and then...suddenly a shift in direction. This fits the profile of a what appears to be a change in Joe D from steady and patient, always seeing the big picture to desperate, erratic and rudderless.

It wasn't that he drafted Washington (as an elite athlete who hadn't put it together yet, whatever, give him a shot), its that he guaranteed the guy money after he exhibited nothing in the NBDL and preseason.

It may be a backroom deal to hook up an agent. Or Deron maybe did something to screw up. But with what we know its just another piece of evidence that towards saying whatever mojo joe had, its gone.

He guaranteed him 250,000. Then the guy molested Austin Daye in the locker room and he cut him. 250,000 down the drain. Chump change. Paying Darko millions and then continuing to say that he has a lot of potential with a straight face during his third season is a mistake and a sign of losing mojo. $250,000 wasted is not.

Desperate? Erratic? Rudderless? Very good description. It gives me a clear visualization. But lets not stop there. Try these on for size

Hapless Buffoon

Ineffectual whimpering loser

Non-entity

As pathetic as that auto company monument in Comerica Park.
